SWAAAE History

Originally founded in 1947 as the California Association of Airport Executives (CAAE), the Southwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (SWAAAE) has always been committed to promoting and protecting aviation.

CAAE supported the formation of the State of California Director of Aeronautics and supported funding by the Federal Aviation Administration. In 1971, the CAAE was invited by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) to become a regional chapter affiliate.

In 1976, approval was given for this association. Shortly thereafter, in 1978, the CAAE became SWAAAE and included the states of California, Arizona and Nevada.

SWAAAE supported the advancement of aviation by hosting and supporting yearly conferences. It was at these conferences that aviation professionals came together to discuss the issues of the day, network and learn about their field.

SWAAAE has a long history of recognizing the contribution individuals make to aviation. They have instituted several awards, including the Airport Manager of the Year, Wanamaker Award, President’s Award and Aviation Excellence Award. SWAAAE also issues scholarships to support both education and professional development.
